What We Do

Across Boundaries recognizes the impact of racism and anti-Black-racism on mental health. 

Our mission is centered on empowering individuals to take control over their well-being. That’s why we offer a diverse range of programs aimed at skill-building, including:

  • Digital
  • Support groups
  • Alternative and complementary therapies
  • Art therapy
  • Creative expressions
  • Community kitchen
  • Individual support
  • Counseling
  • Community partnerships

 

Our goal is to provide our service users with the tools and strategies they need to cope during their healing journey, so that eventually they can navigate life’s challenges with independence. 

 

We are dedicated to a community development approach. This commitment drives us to provide dignified and compassionate mental health and addiction services to all racialized communities. 

Our comprehensive range of mental health support and services are rooted in Anti-Racism/Anti-Black racism and Anti-Oppression frameworks. These frameworks address the negative impact of racism and discrimination on mental health and well-being.

With ongoing community engagement and incorporating the latest research, our progressive strategies are implemented by our capable staff – who are committed to improving the quality of mental health and addiction care for racialized and black people. 

Across Boundaries currently provides services in 15+ languages, including:

  • Caribbean Dialects
  • African Languages -Shona, Amharic, Harare, Xhosa, Tsonga, Afrikaans, Swahili, Somali, Twi
  • Central Asian Languages – Dari, Pashto, Farsi (Persian)
  • South Asian Languages – Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu, Bengali
  • South East Asian Languages – Mandarin

Our Strategic Direction for 2024-2026 is built on the following:

Improve Service Quality of Life:

  • To strengthen the collection, analysis, and utilization of clinical and organizational data
  • To enhance addiction services from a harm reduction perspective
  • To enhance trauma formed approach and integrated clinical care model
  • To explore feasibility of expanding catchment area 

Increase Organization’s Capacity to Succeed:

  • To improve staff’s professional growth and development program
  • To implement retention strategies 
  • To improve recruitment practices

Promote System Adoption of ARAO Framework to Advance Health Equity:

  • To develop and implement a work plan for Across Boundaries to respond to needs of First Nations, Inuit, Metis, and Urban Indigenous communities
  • To build a coalition/network with like minded organizations that serve Black, racialized and other marginalized communities to advocate for and advance systemic health equity
  • To expand ARAO training to broaden the health care sector
  • To partner with academic institutions to conduct community based research to advance health equity for racialized communities
